"Alfie was born with a complex heart condition which was not found until he was 12 days old, when he became breathless and had poor weight gain.
We were sent straight to see the Cardiac team at Birmingham children's where they diagnosed that Alfie had Double outlet right ventricle, VSD, ASD.
He had surgery at 14 days old. Alfie was put on numerous medications and high calorie milk to get him strong enough for major surgery.
At 12 weeks old we had the call that Alfie was to have his next stage operation. Handing our baby over was the hardest thing we have ever had to do, but right by our side was out cardiac liaison nurse who held us up and talked us through everything.
After 5 long hours he was back in intensive care looking pink for the 1st time ever! Next was our biggest challenge. At 18 months old, Alfie started to deteriorate as expected and we were put on a waiting list for open heart surgery....
On June 5th 2007 we had the dreaded call to bring Alfie in. We walked what we call "The Green Mile" to theatre and handed him over. 7 hours later he was back with us in intensive care, and we were shaking the hands of his surgeons and saying thank you. "Thank you" never seems enough for the care and support they give Alfie and our family."
